Opening Ceremony - My 2 Cents (8 Dirhams?)
It's not about how it looks on the ground. It's ALL about how it looks on TV.
And if you asked me, it looked pretty spectacular on TV. One of the best opening ceremonies I've ever seen. i.e. tecnically brilliant, spectacular effects and pyrotechnics.
Didn't get the jist of the show though. Too bad, there was no English broadcast. The English narration was drowned by the Arab commentary on Al Jazeera.
I loved the bit when the Arab bloke rode his horse up the steep ramp to light the flame. He almost didn't make it with the mare slipping and sliding.
The Indian chick who sang was awesome IMHO. So was the Spanish bloke (Jose) and his hot Lebanese counterpart.

On TV they can make even ...On TV they can make even Jennifer Lopez look hot. There were good parts, but on the ground - we spent almost 1 hour listening to stupid jokes of 2 lebanese TV stars, and watching the ugly Orry running arounf the arena. Pre-opening entertainment was supposed to start at 4pm, and the actual opening at 6. Instead they started almost at 7:30.
I probably should have watched it on TV, because on the ground it was ups and downs.

Well Done Qatar ...The Opening of The Asian Games was fantastic.
It was a brilliant show to be part of and the atmosphere in the stadium was very moving.
The whole show was a success - the rain in the pre-show did not dampen the people around me, everyone was getting into the show and participating with the various toys we were given to use.
Everything was excellent and the effects, models, dancers, lights, fireworks - infact everything was amazing and I am glad I was able to witness it in person

i too liked the arab guy on the horse to light the torch...was wondering how they were going to do the flame.....but it was great.didnt expect that.
some times it got a bit boring but overall felt very proud of it having taken place here.

horse ...The guy who doing the horse with the torch is one of Emir's son. I think the horse nearly fall after few step, but in the end he managed to ride all the way to the top.

Awesome ...Though I usually get so bored watching opening ceremonies, that I try to skip them at all, I enjoyed this one. The organizers did a great job.
The only part where I got really really bored was when Al Fahad, head of the Asian Olympic Committee, read his speech in English. Dude, if you can't speak English, for the love of God DON'T.
The part of Sheikh Mohamed and the horse was so dramatic. I was almost holding tight to horse and trying to control it with him. I'm not exactly the horseman, but I assume he did a good job controlling the horse. It would've been a shameful ending to a spectacular show if they did fall.

Impressive ...Hey Pothole Research, FYI the broadcast on Qatar TV channel was without the arabic commentary unlike Al Jazeera which was pretty annoying since u couldn't follow neither English nor Arabic... i was glad to find no arabic commentary on Qatar TV.
Loved the torch lighting part with Sheikh Mohamed, although i felt sorry for the poor horse who almost couldn't make it... must've been cuz of the rain and the stairs were slippery.
All in all, it was fun to watch on TV, although it got boring at some parts but the show and the costumes and music were excellent.

it was sooooooo cold !! ...and to my mind it was more for TV than for the ppl on the ground ... the images I've seen on TV looked far better than it looked in the stadium.

Damn!
Anyway I'll wait for the DVD. All ceremonies volunteers are getting one on the 15th, and I happen to know a few.

WHERE WAS ORRY?? ...Although the Opening Ceremony of the 15th Asian Games was indeed a feast for the eyes, I was a bit disappointed not to see Orry anywhere around. Being the mascot of the Games, he should have been present and should have been given a prominent place in the stadium. Given the fact that he had become a common sight in Doha in the run-up to the Games, I think many would share this view with me.
:) :(

Orry? ...Orry? What's that?
I really love that horse! That guy is so great!I dreamed of it yesterday!Hmm...
Well, I'm from China. The city where I live is called Guangzhou, Canton. We are not rich enough to first held the 2008 Olympics and the 2010 Asian Games I'm afraid.By then, I'll be graduated and maybe we need to pay higher tax...Anyway, I hope we can do it sucessfully!:))

I liked it. For TV of ...I liked it. For TV of course the benefit was that the cameras were positioned to take advantage of every angle. For those of us in the stands there was certainly excitement (in spite of the rain).

Al Kass and Al Jazeera ...Both local broadcasters Al Kass and Al Jazeera have the rights to broadcast the games (also if you have satellite, you can see games coverage on CCTV). You'll just have to do some surfing .... :-)

Orry was there!!! ...Orry took part in the ceremony, he did a piece with the Aspire kids. He was there........Did you not join in the Orry shout, we chanted his name for ages (how sad am I??) He also helped explain the audience participation boxes.

CCTV-5 ...I think CCTV-5 will telecast (live) the closing ceremony, otherwise, we have no other ways to watch these on TV in China...

Disappointed ...Sorry folks, I was a little disappointed in the opening ceremony. It seemed to be missing something. Couldn't put my finger on it. I am told that on the night we missed the best part due to the poor weather. Unfortunately that can't be controlled and I fully understand that. It would be great if we could see the missing parts but I guess the budget has already been blown. My housemate managed to be lucky enough to see the rehearsal and told me what I missed.
I enjoyed the passion of the Qataris. Boy can they cheer and clapp and shout. lol. I think they almost burst my eardrum.
Does anyone know if there will be a DVD of the rehearsals and opening night as we were told we were not allowed to take any form of photographic equipment; what a joke; subsequently we did the right thing as we were advised and missed many shots for our memories.
