Singapore to study two-billion-dollar Qatar construction deal

DOHA (AFP) - Singaporean consultancy firm Jurong International signed a contract to study the feasibility of a two-billion-dollar deal for a "smart industrial city" in the gas-rich Gulf emirate of Qatar.

The deal for the five-square-kilometre (two square mile) development focused on the electronics, technology and manufacturing sectors was signed with Qatari bank Masraf Al Rayan.

"This unique city, designed to cater for the current demands and future developments of a number of specific industrial sectors will boast intelligent technology integrated with a state-of-the-art industrial platform," the bank's chairman, Hussain al-Abdulla, said in a statement.

"In addition to accommodating local, regional and global electronics, technology and manufacturing companies, the city will also house concentrations for other innovation-led industries."

The Singaporean firm's Middle East general manager Ling Poon Lim said the detailed feasibility study would begin this week.

"Our team of planners, architects, engineers and consultants has extensive experience on similar ground-breaking projects in Qatar, Asia and the Middle East," he said.
