France beat Morocco 2-0 to become first team to the world cup 2026 semifinals

France reached the World Cup 2026 semifinals after defeating Morocco 2-0 in their quarterfinal at the Boston Stadium on Thursday, July 9, ending the Atlas Lions’ impressive run in the tournament.

After a cagey first half, Kylian Mbappe finally broke the deadlock in the 60th minute, curling home to give Les Bleus the lead. Ousmane Dembele doubled France’s advantage six minutes later with a low finish as Didier Deschamps’ side took control and comfortably saw out the remainder of the contest.

France had the best opportunity before the break when they were awarded a penalty in the 28th minute, but Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou produced an excellent save to deny Mbappe and keep the scores level at half-time.

Morocco defended resolutely throughout the opening period and frustrated the 2018 world champions, who struggled to create clear-cut chances despite enjoying more of the possession.

The momentum shifted after the restart as France raised the tempo. Mbappe’s opener settled the contest before Dembele struck six minutes later to put the result beyond doubt. Morocco attempted to respond late on but could not find a way past the French defence as Les Bleus secured a place in the last four.

France, finalists at the 2022 World Cup and champions in 2018, will now face the winner of Friday’s quarterfinal between Spain and Belgium as they continue their pursuit of another world title.
