A Brief History

Al Gharrafa lies within Al Rayyan Municipality on the north-western side of the Doha metropolitan area, and its name derives from the Arabic word meaning "to scoop up," a reference to the low-lying floodplain where residents once collected water. The locality appears in records dating back to the early twentieth century, when the surrounding inland plains were used largely for seasonal grazing by Bedouin communities. It grew into a residential suburb during the 1970s, as Qatar's post-independence oil revenues funded a wave of new housing and infrastructure and many Qatari families were resettled from older central Doha districts into newer outlying developments. Community facilities followed in the decades after, among them the Al Gharrafa Youth Centre, which opened in 1982.
