A Brief History

Al Khor is one of Qatar's oldest continuously inhabited settlements, founded around the middle of the 18th century by the Al Muhannadi tribe on a natural bay — the name derives from the Arabic "khawr," meaning creek or inlet. For generations it was an important pearling and fishing centre, ranked among the country's leading pearling hubs before the industry declined in the early 20th century with the rise of cultured pearls and the Great Depression. The discovery of oil and gas from the 1940s onward reshaped the wider economy, and the development of Ras Laffan Industrial City to the north brought further growth to the area. Archaeological finds on nearby Al Khor Island point to human activity in the area stretching back thousands of years.

Al Khor is predominantly low-rise, defined by villas, family compounds and residential streets rather than the high-rise towers of central Doha, giving it a calmer, more suburban feel.
