Historical Context & Architecture

A Brief History

Al Maha Island was reclaimed from the sea as part of Lusail City's growth north of Doha and opened in 2022, roughly two weeks ahead of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. It was conceived as a dedicated entertainment and hospitality destination, debuting with the Lusail Winter Wonderland amusement park, the Nammos beach club and the Al Maha Arena alongside a line-up of international restaurants. Since opening it has continued to expand, and Qatar Museums has announced the future Lusail Museum, designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, for the island's southern tip.

Architecture & Character

The island is a modern, master-planned waterfront environment rather than a traditional neighbourhood of villas or compounds. Its built form centres on landscaped promenades, private beaches, low-rise leisure pavilions and restaurant venues, with the temporary structures and rides of the seasonal Winter Wonderland shaping the skyline through the winter months. It sits within sight of Lusail's marina towers and the Parisian-inspired Place Vendôme development on the adjacent mainland, giving the setting a polished, resort-like feel.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Al Maha Island known for?

It is one of Qatar's flagship leisure destinations, best known for the seasonal Lusail Winter Wonderland amusement park, the Nammos beach club, the Al Maha Arena and a cluster of high-end restaurants such as LPM and Bagatelle. The island attracts more than 1.5 million visitors a year.

Is Al Maha Island a residential area where I can live?

The island itself is principally an entertainment and hospitality destination rather than a housing district, so people who want to live nearby generally choose apartments in the surrounding Lusail districts, such as the Marina area. Lusail as a whole is master-planned as a large mixed-use city with substantial residential capacity.

How do you get to Al Maha Island?

The island is connected to the Lusail mainland by a causeway and sits beside the Place Vendôme mall, a short drive from central Lusail and roughly 15 to 20 km north of central Doha. The wider Lusail area is also served by the Doha Metro Red Line and the Lusail Tram, with onward road access to the island.

Can foreigners buy property in this part of Lusail?

Al Maha Island lies within Lusail City, which is one of Qatar's designated freehold zones where non-Qataris are permitted to buy property with full ownership rights. Qualifying purchases in such areas can also make owners eligible to apply for property-linked residency.
