A Brief History

Al Thumama took shape as Doha expanded southward in recent decades, laid out as one of the city's newer planned residential districts rather than growing from an older village core. Its profile rose sharply in the years around the 2022 FIFA World Cup, when major infrastructure was concentrated nearby, including a large potable-water reservoir completed around 2020 and the purpose-built Al Thumama Stadium. The opening of Hamad International Airport to its east and the strengthening of surrounding ring roads further anchored the district as a well-connected part of southern Doha.
