Historical Context & Architecture

A Brief History

Lusail City is a purpose-built planned city on Qatar's coast, roughly 20 kilometres north of Doha, whose plans were first announced in the mid-2000s and whose construction began around 2006. It was conceived and developed by the state-backed company Qatari Diar, which established the Lusail Real Estate Development Company to deliver the master plan, as a flagship project aligned with the Qatar National Vision 2030. Laid out from scratch across largely undeveloped coastal land, including reclaimed shoreline and man-made islands, the city was designed to house several hundred thousand residents, workers and visitors within a series of distinct districts. Its profile rose internationally when Lusail Stadium hosted the final of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and the area became directly reachable by the Doha Metro Red Line, whose Lusail terminus opened in 2019.

Architecture & Character

Lusail is a master-planned city laid out across roughly 38 square kilometres and 19 districts, ranging from dense clusters of high-rise residential and office towers to lower-rise waterfront villas, marinas and purpose-built islands. Its Marina District forms a lively waterfront core of mixed-use towers, promenades, yacht berths and restaurants, crowned by the crescent-shaped Katara Towers, whose twin curves are inspired by the crossed scimitars of Qatar's national emblem and house luxury hotels. The overall design pairs contemporary architecture and sustainability-minded infrastructure, such as a light-rail tram network and dedicated pedestrian and cycle routes, with motifs drawn from Qatari and Islamic tradition. The result is a distinctly modern, tower-and-waterfront skyline that stands in clear contrast to the older, more established neighbourhoods of Doha to the south.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Lusail a good place for families with kids?

Yes, in the master-planned sense — it is safe, clean and well-serviced, with international schools in or near the city, large parks like Crescent Park, the Marina Promenade for walks and cycling, and family attractions such as Place Vendôme and (seasonally) Lusail Winter Wonderland. The main caveats are that some residential pockets are still maturing and daily errands often mean driving between districts.

What schools are in or near Lusail?

Options in or beside Lusail include Newton International Academy Lusail (British curriculum), Arab International Academy Lusail (International Baccalaureate), and Doha British School's Rawdat Al Hamama campus (British curriculum) on the city's edge. Lusail is planned to host many more schools as districts complete, so availability is expanding.

Is there a metro to Lusail?

Yes. The Doha Metro Red Line reaches the Lusail area, and inside the city the Lusail Tram (four lines, around 25 stations) connects the Marina, Boulevard/Downtown, Fox Hills, Crescent Park and Stadium districts. Metro and tram share Qatar Rail ticketing, so you can transfer between them; Legtaifiya is the main interchange.

How do I get around Lusail day to day?

Within Lusail the tram covers the main districts, and the Red Line links you to central Doha, West Bay and beyond. That said, most residents still rely on cars, taxis or ride-hailing for everyday trips, since districts are spread out and not everything is within walking distance of a tram stop.

Is Lusail quiet or lively?

It's a mix. Hubs like Lusail Boulevard, the Marina Promenade and Place Vendôme are lively, especially in the evenings and cooler months. Away from those hotspots, many residential streets are calm and some newer pockets still feel quiet as they fill in.

Is Lusail expat-friendly?

Yes. It's a modern, international, English-friendly environment that attracts a large expat population, with contemporary apartments, international schools, and dining and retail geared to a global crowd. It's one of the more popular areas for expats who want new-build waterfront living near The Pearl and Katara.

What is there to do in Lusail?

Highlights include the Marina Promenade, Lusail Boulevard's dining and entertainment, Place Vendôme mall, the Katara Towers landmark, Crescent Park, Lusail Stadium events, the Lusail Sports Arena, and seasonal attractions like Lusail Winter Wonderland on Al Maha Island.

What kind of homes does Lusail have?

Lusail is dominated by modern, purpose-built housing — high-rise apartments (especially around the Marina), townhouses and villas (for example in the Golf and Fox Hills districts), typically with new fittings and fibre internet. It's newer and more high-rise in character than most older Doha neighbourhoods.

Are there hospitals and mosques in Lusail?

Each district is planned around its own mosques and community facilities, and The View Hospital — a private hospital developed with Cedars-Sinai — sits in the Al Qutaifiya area just beside Lusail, near Katara and The Pearl. Central Doha's major hospitals are also a short drive away.
