A Brief History

The district was laid out in the 1970s under Emir Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani, who ruled Qatar from 1972 to 1995, and takes its name from him. It was developed primarily as housing for Qatari families, with the "South" designation distinguishing it from the neighbouring Madinat Khalifa North. Over the following decades it grew into one of Doha's more settled inland neighbourhoods, gradually becoming home to a diverse mix of Qatari and expatriate residents.
