A Brief History

Najma is one of Doha's older districts, with some of its traditional courtyard houses dating back to the 1960s. It took shape as the city expanded outward through the 1960s and 1970s, developing along the newly built B and C Ring Roads, and grew rapidly during the 1970s and 1980s into a densely populated, mixed-use neighbourhood. Its population climbed from roughly 9,000 in the mid-1980s to around 25,000 by 2010, reflecting its enduring appeal as an affordable, central place to live. More recently, the 2019 opening of the Al Mansoura Metro station reconnected the area to the wider transit network.

Architecture & Character

Najma is a compact, low- to mid-rise district rather than a towers-and-waterfront one, characterised by residential buildings with shops and businesses on their ground floors. Municipal rules generally cap buildings at around ground-plus-seven storeys, giving the area a consistent, human-scale streetscape. Older courtyard houses sit alongside apartment blocks, while the arterial roads of Airport Street, B Ring Road and C Ring Road are lined with car showrooms, markets and offices.
