Historical Context & Architecture

A Brief History

The island was master-planned as part of Lusail City's northern expansion and is developed by Qetaifan Projects, a company established in 2017 and owned by Katara Hospitality. Residential plots were released to buyers in phases from around 2020, while work on the island's landmark waterpark progressed through the early 2020s. Meryal Waterpark opened in late November 2023, cementing Qetaifan Island as one of Qatar's flagship leisure destinations.

Architecture & Character

Qetaifan Island blends a resort-and-leisure zone with low-rise residential neighbourhoods rather than dense high-rise towers. Waterfront and garden villas, townhouses and apartment blocks sit alongside beachfront hotels such as Rixos Premium Qetaifan Island North, several beaches, and the Meryal Waterpark, whose roughly 85-metre Icon Tower is a defining landmark visible across the area. The overall feel is contemporary and waterfront-oriented, with the island linked to the Lusail mainland by a pair of suspension bridges. Design cues draw on Qatari culture, while the residential areas lean toward a Mediterranean-influenced style.
