A Brief History

Umm Ghwailina grew as an inner-city district as Doha expanded outward from its old core during the second half of the twentieth century, and its name traces back to the local "ghulan" tree once common in the area. It developed into one of the capital's densely settled residential quarters, with its population roughly doubling between the mid-1980s and 2010. A major milestone came in 2019, when the underground Umm Ghwailina station on the Doha Metro's Red Line opened, and the district has since been designated a District Centre under Qatar's National Master Plan for continued mixed-use renewal.

The built environment is dominated by mid-rise residential apartment buildings laid out on a compact urban grid, rather than the gated villa compounds or high-rise towers found in newer parts of Doha.
