A Brief History
West Bay Lagoon, known in Arabic as Leqtaifiya, sits on land that was reclaimed in the 1970s and 1980s following extensive dredging along the Gulf coast to the north of central Doha. It was developed as the residential side of Qatar's wider West Bay masterplan, which set out to create a new business and diplomatic centre for the capital while this district provided much of the accompanying housing. The name Leqtaifiya derives from qataf (Limonium axillare), a coastal plant found abundantly in the area. Today it forms part of Zone 66 within Doha Municipality.
