One of Qatar’s FIFA World Cup venues is taking on a new sporting identity as the country prepares to host another major global tournament.
Al Janoub Stadium has been transformed into an 8,600-seat basketball arena in preparation for the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027, marking a striking transition from football pitch to basketball court.
Images of the transformation show the venue configured for indoor basketball, offering an early look at how Qatar is adapting its existing sporting infrastructure ahead of the tournament.
From football to basketball
Al Janoub Stadium was among the venues used during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, welcoming international football fans and teams during the tournament.
Its conversion for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup gives the venue a second life on the global sporting stage, this time hosting one of international basketball’s biggest competitions.
The converted arena will have a capacity of 8,600 spectators.
According to information shared alongside images of the transformation, the venue is expected to become the first to host matches at both a FIFA World Cup and a FIBA Basketball World Cup.
Qatar prepares for FIBA World Cup 2027
Qatar will host the FIBA Basketball World Cup in 2027, bringing the international tournament to the Middle East for the first time.
The transformation of Al Janoub Stadium highlights how existing infrastructure from the 2022 FIFA World Cup can be adapted for different sports and major international events.
For fans, the change will offer a very different experience inside a familiar World Cup venue, with the football field giving way to an indoor basketball setup designed for the 2027 competition.
As preparations continue, the transformed venue offers an early glimpse of how Qatar plans to build on its World Cup infrastructure and sporting legacy — moving from football in 2022 to basketball in 2027.
