Merino’s late strike sends Spain past Belgium into World Cup semifinals

Spain reached the FIFA World Cup 2026 semifinals after Mikel Merino struck a dramatic late winner to seal a 2-1 victory over Belgium in their quarterfinal at the Los Angeles Stadium on Friday, July 10, setting up a heavyweight last-four clash with France. 

The European champions took the lead in the 30th minute when Fabián Ruiz reacted quickest after Belgium failed to clear their lines. Dani Olmo’s initial effort was saved, but Ruiz bundled home the rebound to reward Spain’s dominance in possession. 

Belgium responded impressively before the interval, ending Spain’s remarkable run without conceding a goal at the tournament.

Charles De Ketelaere rose to head home in the 41st, giving the Belgians renewed belief after they suffered a pre-match setback when captain Youri Tielemans withdrew during the warm-up with a hamstring injury, forcing Hans Vanaken into the starting lineup and leaving Kevin De Bruyne to captain the side. 

The second half developed into a tense tactical battle, with both sides struggling to create clear-cut chances as extra time loomed.

Spain finally found the decisive breakthrough in the 88th after Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens, who had replaced the injured Thibaut Courtois, failed to deal with a long-range effort from Pau Cubarsí.

Merino reacted quickest to the loose ball, firing home from close range to spark jubilant celebrations among the Spanish players. 

Belgium pressed forward during seven minutes of stoppage time in search of another equaliser, but Spain held firm to book their place in the semifinals.

Luis de la Fuente’s side, considered among the tournament favourites after a string of impressive performances, will now face France for a place in the World Cup final after the French defeated Morocco 2-0 in Thursday’s quarterfinal.
