Qatar’s Tahsin Jamshid poised to make World Cup history

Tahsin Jamshid is set to make history at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after being named in Qatar’s 26-man squad, putting the 19-year-old on course to become the first Kerala-origin player to play at football’s biggest tournament.

Born in Doha to parents from Kerala, his selection marks a milestone for football fans in both Qatar and India.

The young attacker, whose family roots trace to Thalassery and Valapattanam in Kerala’s Kannur district, developed through Qatar’s renowned Aspire Football Academy before continuing his rise with Al Duhail football club.

He represented Qatar at the youth level, progressing from the U-16 and U-17 teams, and later impressed at the AFC U-20 Asian Cup in China. In June 2024, he made his senior debut for Qatar in a World Cup qualifier against Afghanistan.

Tahsin’s father, Jamshid Thachankandy, a former Kerala sub-junior player and Calicut University footballer, played a key role in his development as his first coach and mentor. After an injury ended his own playing career at 25, Jamshid remained closely involved in the sport and supported his son’s football journey in Qatar.

Now, Tahsin stands on the brink of a historic World Cup appearance, representing the culmination of years of dedication, development, and family support.
