Qatar Basketball Team Begins Turkey Camp Ahead of World Cup Qualifiers and Asian Games

Qatar’s national basketball team has begun a training camp in Turkey as part of its preparations for upcoming international competitions, including the second stage of the Asian qualifiers for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup and the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games in Japan.

Under Turkish coach Hakan Demir, the camp will focus on improving the players’ physical and technical readiness, strengthening cohesion within the squad and developing tactical plans through intensive daily training sessions.

The coaching staff will also use the camp to assess different tactical options and line-ups ahead of a demanding series of official matches over the coming weeks.

Training will include work on defensive and attacking plans, as well as addressing technical issues identified during previous matches.

Qatar advanced to the second stage of the World Cup qualifiers after finishing second in Group D during the first stage with 10 points, one point behind group winners Lebanon.

The team will open the second stage against China in Doha on August 27 before travelling to face Japan on August 30.

Qatar’s qualifying campaign will continue with a match against South Korea on November 26, followed by Japan on November 29. The team will then face China on February 26 and conclude its campaign against South Korea on March 1.

Although Qatar has already secured a place at the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup as the host nation, the qualifiers provide the coaching staff with competitive matches against leading Asian teams as part of preparations for the tournament in Doha.

Qatar is also preparing for the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games, where it has been drawn in Group B alongside Iran, Jordan and Chinese Taipei.

The team will begin its Asian Games campaign against Iran on September 10, before facing Jordan on September 12 and Chinese Taipei on September 13.

The men’s basketball competition will feature 12 teams divided into three groups. Group A includes Japan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia and Indonesia, while Group B features Qatar, Iran, Jordan and Chinese Taipei. Group C consists of China, the Philippines, Bahrain and Kazakhstan.

The knockout stages will follow the group phase, leading to the final of the men’s basketball competition.
