WhatsApp Rolls Out Usernames, No More Phone Numbers

WhatsApp is introducing unique usernames so people can message one another without revealing phone numbers, and the feature is being rolled out globally over the coming months. Users can already start reserving a username via the app’s profile/account settings on mobile (not on desktop or web) once the option appears for them. Usernames will be limited to 35 characters, are optional, and can be changed or removed later, while some high-profile names will be restricted to prevent impersonation.

Meta says the change is intended as a privacy feature to give people more control over how they appear in chats, particularly in group settings. WhatsApp will still require a phone number to create an account, and there will be no public username directory; the firm plans safeguards such as optional short numeric "username keys" and automated systems to detect abusive patterns to reduce scams.

Experts warn that, despite the username privacy layer, WhatsApp remains part of Meta’s ecosystem and collects metadata across accounts when users link profiles via Accounts Centre to match handles on Instagram or Facebook. To reserve a name, update to the latest WhatsApp version and check your mobile profile settings when the rollout reaches your account.
