The title “Father Amir” became inseparably associated with HH the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani following Qatar’s peaceful transfer of leadership in 2013.

More than an affectionate description, the title reflected two defining aspects of his position: he was the former Amir of the State of Qatar and the father of the country’s reigning Amir, HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

HH the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad served as Amir from 1995 to 2013, leading Qatar through a period of major economic, social and cultural development. The Amiri Diwan describes him as one of the country’s iconic leaders and the architect of its modern revival.

A historic transfer of leadership

On June 25, 2013, Sheikh Hamad announced his decision to hand over power to his son and Heir Apparent, HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

Following the announcement, HH Sheikh Tamim assumed his duties as Amir of the State of Qatar, marking a smooth and peaceful transition of leadership.

It was after this transition that HH the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad became officially known as HH the Father Amir.

The title distinguished him from the reigning Amir while continuing to recognise the position he had held as Qatar’s head of state for 18 years.

What does “Father Amir” mean?

Each part of the title carries a specific meaning.

The word “Father” identifies Sheikh Hamad as the father of Qatar’s current Amir, HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

The word “Amir” acknowledges his previous position as the ruler and head of state of Qatar.

Together, the title identifies him as both the country’s former Amir and the father of its reigning Amir.

It should not be interpreted simply as a reference to his role as a father figure or as an informal nickname. It is a formal designation connected to Qatar’s leadership structure following the 2013 transition.

A title uniquely associated with Sheikh Hamad

The Amiri Diwan’s official timeline of Qatar’s rulers lists Sheikh Hamad as “HH the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.”

Earlier rulers are listed by their names and periods of rule without carrying the same designation. Based on the Amiri Diwan’s official record, Sheikh Hamad is the only former ruler identified under the title “HH the Father Amir.”

This makes the title uniquely associated with his place in Qatar’s modern history.

Qatar’s Amir for 18 years

Sheikh Hamad assumed leadership in 1995 and remained Amir until the transfer of power in 2013.

During that period, Qatar strengthened its global position and underwent far-reaching development across energy, education, infrastructure, healthcare, aviation, media and diplomacy.

The country’s expanding international role and domestic transformation during his reign ensured that the title “Father Amir” carried significance beyond its literal meaning. It recognised a former ruler whose years in leadership had helped shape Qatar’s modern direction.

A title that reflected continuity

The title also symbolised continuity between two periods of Qatari leadership.

HH the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad’s decision to transfer power allowed HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to begin a new chapter while maintaining stability and continuity within the state.

“Father Amir” therefore became a concise way to acknowledge HH the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad’s former authority, his relationship to the reigning Amir and his continuing place within Qatar’s national story.
