As schools in Qatar gear up for the new academic year, the country's Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) has called on parents to get their children, aged 12 and above, vaccinated against COVID-19.
In a post on its Twitter page, the Ministry has shared 5 reasons to vaccinate children 12 years and older. These are:
1. 7 out of 10 children in Qatar aged 12 to 17 have already gotten at least one shot of the COVID-19 vaccine and no major side effects have been reported.
2. Although the risk of severe COVID-19 symptoms is lesser in children compared to older adults, they can still contract COVID-19 and may develop complications such as Long COVID.
3. Children who are not vaccinated are at higher risk of catching COVID-19 and can pass the virus to more vulnerable members of the family.
4. The delta variant, which has been found in Qatar and most countries across the globe, is highly transmissible and causes more severe symptoms than other strains.
5. The more children who are fully vaccinated, the safer the school environment will be.

Earlier this month, the Head of Vaccination Section in the Department of Health Protection and Communicable Disease Control at the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), Dr Soha Al Bayat asked parents not to be afraid of getting their children vaccinated.
She had highlighted that the response to children’s vaccination against COVID-19 has been very good and children themselves have been quite keen to get vaccinated.
