The demise of HH President of the sisterly United Arab Emirates Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who passed away today, was lamented by the Amir, HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, on Friday.

His father, the late His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who served as the UAE's first president from 1971 until his death on November 2, 2004, was elected to succeed him.

Sheikh Khalifa, the second President of the United Arab Emirates and the 16th Ruler of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, was born in 1948. He was Sheikh Zayed's eldest son.

Sheikh Khalifa has presided over a massive reorganization of both the Federal Administration and the government of Abu Dhabi since becoming President of the UAE.

His initiatives have brought forth immense success and growth to the United Arab Emirates. His sudden demise has brought sorrow to everyone.

In a statement issued by the Amiri Diwan, HH the Amir emphasized that HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan was a brilliant leader who embodied wisdom and moderation. His Highness went on to say that the late devoted his life to serving his country and ummah. HH the Amir prayed to Allah Almighty to fully compensate the deceased for his good deeds, to have mercy on his soul and rest it in peace in paradise, and to reward him with the best reward for what he gave to his country and nation, and to help the honorable Al Nahyan family, the government and people of the sisterly United Arab Emirates, as well as the Arab and Islamic nations, with patience and solace.

HH the Amir has ordered that the state observe three days of mourning and that flags be lowered to half-staff.
