Food safety is among the top concerns for Qatar. This is reflected in several measures the country’s relevant authorities have taken including inspections at food outlets, disposal of items that are considered toxic or unfit for human consumption, among others.

In line with this, the Cabinet yesterday approved a draft decision to establish a permanent committee for human food safety in the country.

Under the requirements of the draft, the Standing Committee for Human Food Safety will be set up at the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH).

A representative of the Ministry will lead the committee and the members of the committee will be selected from other relevant authorities.

Some of the areas that the committee will be responsible for include: proposing strategies, policies, and procedures pertaining to food safety in Qatar.

The committee will also work to develop the necessary mechanisms to tackle food safety risks at the national level.

The cabinet session was chaired by His Excellency the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Thani.

Upon conclusion of the session, HE the Minister of Justice and Acting Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Dr Issa bin Saad Al Jafali Al Nuaimi issued a statement revealing details of the meeting that included approvals of draft laws on the below:

-  a draft decision of HE the Minister of Municipality and Environment to form a joint committee for the removal and disposal of abandoned vehicles, machinery, and equipment. This is to be established at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment.

- a draft decision of HE the Minister of Interior to set up a committee to implement the rulings issued for the disposal of narcotic drugs and dangerous psychotropic substances legally ordered to be confiscated. According to the draft, the committee will be headed by the director of the Verdict Execution Department at the Ministry of Interior and with the membership of representatives from the competent authorities.

- a draft decision to reorganize the Compensation Claims Committee at the Ministry of Finance.
