Qatar, taking great pride in its history, has always gone the extra mile to keep its traditions and activities alive.

The art of pearl diving has been deeply ingrained into Qatari history. And to celebrate it, the Beaches Department at the Katara Cultural Village is organising the Al Mina Pearl Diving Competition for kids (10 to 15 years).

Registration for the June 15 to 17 event is currently open and will go on until June 10. All contestants have to be medically and physically fit to be a part of the event.

The fifth edition of the competition, which is being held after a break due to the Covid-19 pandemic, has seen an enthusiastic response. Competition supervisor Saeed Al Kuwari said 30 Qatari children had so far registered for the event. He expected more coming forward in the next few days.

The competition is expected to help young people connect to their country’s rich maritime heritage and learn about it in more detail. It will also help them get a feel of the life which their elders lived during the era of pearl diving.

Those wishing to register can do so by visiting the Beaches Department on the fifth floor, from 10am until 3pm.

The competing children will be divided into teams of 12, where each team will be accompanied by Noukhatha, Majdami and Rdif.
