It is no secret that once commissioned, the Doha Metro project will make a significant change in the way Qatar moves.

The Doha Metro is expected to bring in considerable environmental and economic benefits as it will significantly reduce carbon emissions and traffic congestion on roads, the Central Municipal Council (CMC) was told, according to Gulf Times.

Qatar Rail CEO Abdullah Abulaziz Turki Al Subaie said that Doha Metro and other road and transport projects were expected to solve at least 50% of traffic congestion in the city. What it means is an annual savings of QR3,3bn.

The Doha Metro, once operational, is also expected to limit carbon emissions by up to 30%, besides saving time and efforts.

Besides the obvious environmental benefits, Doha Metro is also likely to be good news for travellers as rides in the train are expected to start at a very nominal QR2 in the first year, according to Qatar Tribune.

Al Subaie said that 90% of the project’s first phase had already been completed, including 37 metro stations — six above ground and 31 underground — from three metro lines.

The official said that land plots over metro projects would be developed to increase the project’s revenues and make it economically stronger.
