Doha has been chosen as the venue for the 140th session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), it was announced yesterday.

The 139th Assembly, which concluded yesterday in Geneva, Switzerland, selected Doha as the hosts of its next edition, which will run from April 6 to 10, 2019, reported Gulf Times.

Speaker of the Advisory Council HE Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid Al Mahmoud welcomed the decision.

He invited the speakers and delegations of parliaments from around the world to Doha to witness firsthand the developments the country has made under the wise leadership of HH The Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, reported Qatar Tribune

During his speech, Al Mahmoud stressed Qatar's readiness and confidence in the success of the upcoming conference in Doha.

The 139th session of the IPU adopted a number of recommendations and the final document, all emphasising the role of parliamentary leadership in promoting peace and development in an era of innovation and technological change.

It also stressed the need to strengthen parliamentary cooperation among member states in the area of migration.

The IPU is a global organisation that brings together national parliaments of different countries. It works together with parliaments to safeguard peace and drive positive democratic change through political dialogue and concrete action.
