Eid Al-Adha in Qatar is all about the quiet joy of gathering with family, sharing meals, and reflecting on the meaning of sacrifice.

This year, Eid Al-Adha will begin on Wednesday, May 27, 2026. People will be preparing for prayers, reconnecting with loved ones, and enjoying traditions that feel both timeless and personal. Whether it’s the early morning atmosphere at the mosque, the smell of home-cooked dishes, or simply sitting together after a long day, it’s those small, genuine moments that make Eid Al-Adha special. What is your favorite part of Eid Al-Adha?

The Heart of Celebration

At its soul, Eid Al-Adha is a beautiful tribute to the devotion of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), when he was commanded by God to sacrifice his son as a test of his faith. Out of devotion, he was willing to obey, but at the last moment, God replaced his son with a ram (sheep).

Muslims honor this history during Eid Al-Adha by sacrificing livestock, keeping alive the memory of Ibrahim’s faith and God’s mercy. It also marks the joyful conclusion for the Hajj (pilgrimage season) For all of us here in Qatar, the spirit of the holiday shines through three wonderful pillars:

  • Sacrifice (Udhiya): A powerful tradition of livestock sacrifices to show our deep gratitude. It goes back to the story of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham). He was commanded by God to sacrifice his son as a test of faith, but at the last moment
  • Giving Back: Sharing meat with those in need, making sure every single person in our community feels festive love.
  • Family First: Reconnecting with our roots through heartfelt visits and enjoying some heart-warming meals.

Getting Ready: Livestock & Smart Initiatives

Qatar makes it so easy to honor our traditions! To handle the holiday rush, the Ministry of Municipality and Widam Food Company run a great national initiative to keep things organized and stress-free.

Subsidized Sheep for Citizens: Every year, the government shows its support by subsidizing sheep prices for Qatari citizens (typically 18+ with a valid QID, and with a limit of 1 sheep per adult).

  • The Price: Usually set at an affordable 1,000 QAR for local or imported sheep.
  • The Goal: Keeping the market steady and ensuring this beautiful tradition stays accessible to everyone.

Where the Action Happens

For safety, the Ministry encourages the use of licensed slaughterhouses only. Here are the main locations:

  • Al Wakrah Central Market: A massive facility that can handle thousands of animals a day.
  • Umm Salal Central Market: Ensuring high standards for livestock, with specialized veterinary teams.
  • Al Sheehaniya & Al Rayyan: Perfect, convenient spots for those in the western and central suburbs.
  • The Widam App: Want to skip the heat? Use the Widam mobile app to buy your animal and arrange slaughtering or delivery from your living room!

Let the Shopping Begin!

Eid shopping in Doha always has that familiar buzz, not overwhelming, just the kind of energy that makes you smile when you see families picking out clothes or stocking up for the big meal.

  • Eid Fashion: Tailors are busy, and you’ll notice men picking up fresh thobes while women browse abayas and Jalabiyas. Souq Waqif and Souq Al Ali are perfect for that mix of tradition and the scent of high-quality oud.
  • The Big Feast: Kitchens start filling with the smell of Machboos, Harees, and sweet Luqaimat. It’s all about comfort and sharing.
  • Machboos: Deliciously spiced rice with lamb meat that melts in your mouth.
  • Harees: The ultimate Qatari comfort food. Rich, slow-cooked blend of wheat and meat.
  • Luqaimat: Golden, fried dough balls drizzled in sweet syrup.
  • Eidiya: Don’t forget the kids! Get early to the ATMs to get those fresh, crisp banknotes to give as Eidiya.

Points to Remember:

  • Book Early: Don’t wait! Secure your Udhiya a few days in advance.
  • Health First: Stick to authorized slaughterhouse facilities; the free veterinary checks ensure everything is perfect.
  • Beat the Heat: Since Eid Al-Adha falls in late May, plan your outdoor adventures for the cooler early mornings or the late evenings.

Wishing you and your loved ones a blessed and joyful Eid Al-Adha!
