It is quite rare that one can boast about having had an Indian meal prepared by a Michelin-starred chef in Doha. And when you do get the chance, it is an opportunity to enjoy the culinary excellence this experience offers. A unique dining experience awaits you at Jamavar Doha, located at the famed Sheraton Grand Doha Resort & Convention Hotel. The famed London restaurant set up in Doha nearly a year back and is now currently celebrating its first anniversary with a new menu by none other than Michelin-starred chef Surender Mohan from March 21–30.

Jamavar and its history

The name Jamavar is inspired by the 16th century Kashmiri shawls that are intricately woven and beautifully embroidered. Drawing from the name, the essence of Jamavar is to weave a wonderful menu that is inspired by the rich royal cuisine from various parts of India. The first Jamavar restaurant opened at The Leela Palace in Bengaluru, India, in 2001 and soon went on to have branches in other Indian cities. Soon, an international branch opened in London and finally, Jamavar launched a branch in Doha in 2021.

Chef Surender Mohan has been associated with the restaurant for more than 20 years now and is the current Culinary Director and Executive Chef of Jamavar London. Jamavar Doha has welcomed him on the occasion of its first anniversary and is set to present his signature dishes as part of a set menu from March 21 to March 30.

Chef Surender Mohan

Chef Surender has an impressive career spanning nearly three decades and his culinary excellence is testimony to that fact. With several awards, rewards, and recognition under his hat, the chef has firmly found a place with the Nair group, the family that is at the helm of all Jamavar restaurants. In conversation with the chef, we discussed his early passion for cooking, his inspiration, and what drives him ahead in his field.

Born in Delhi, growing up in Amritsar, Chef Surender was keen to cook from an early age while he watched his mother cook. She was a cook par excellence and he would often find himself observing and assisting her in the kitchen. Soon he joined the Leela as a sous chef and there’s been no looking back. Over the course of his travels across India, he’s always been a keen learner of the rich diversity of tastes, ingredients, and cooking techniques of various parts of the country. Chef says this has majorly influenced his approach to cooking which is inspired by many regional flavors. His humble approach to his profession has ensured that he’s constantly learning through his various experiences in the culinary field.

Jamavar’s most famous dishes are apparently the scallops served in a South Indian style gravy, the aloo tikki chaat, and the mutton shami kabab with chur-chur naan. On being asked his personal favorite dish to cook, Chef remarks that kadi chawal and rajma chawal make for great comfort meals.

The new menu from March 21--30

Guests who visit Jamavar can anticipate some authentic Indian lunch and dinner experience with their fine dining menu that includes both a set menu and a la carte menu. Chef Surender Mohan draws from his years of culinary expertise and has prepared a new menu inspired by the different princely states of India. The dishes are meant to be wholesome in flavor and have robust tastes that come from traditional cooking techniques. Some of the new dishes include Hazratganj lamb chops, Bikaneri paneer tikka, charred lobster, murgh malai tikka, and raan-e-jamavar.

The Michelin-starred chef’s signature dishes are available for patrons to order as a part of a signature set menu starting from QAR 225 and a la carte menu options starting at QAR 55 onwards. The menu is available all day from lunch 12.30 pm till midnight and from March 21 till March 30.
