With the current COVID-19 pandemic, we believe there is no better time to practice safe hand hygiene. With almost 200 cases in the last 24 hours, according to the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), everyone is expected to adopt healthy hygiene routines.
Although restrictions have been lifted and case numbers are declining, people continue to be admitted with moderate to severe COVID-19 symptoms. According to MoPH, Qatar can expect a second wave of the virus if the precautionary measures are not followed.
"Hand Hygiene for All" is the theme of this year's Global Handwashing Day, following a recent World Health Organization initiative calling for improved hand hygiene. This is an opportunity to design, test, and replicate creative ways to encourage people to wash their hands with soap at critical times.
Keeping our hands cleans is one of the most basic habits we can practice, preventing the spread of the coronavirus to others. Washing your hands with soap and water is the simplest, most effective way to stay healthy.
The following are the most effective steps to keep your hands clean.
- Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.
- Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the back of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
- Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice.
- Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
- Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.
When we rub our hands with soap and water for 20 seconds or more, it rips the outer layer of the virus and enables the components of the soap to kill it.
Some suffer from dry skin after washing their hands too many times. With winter approaching, this is a cause for concern. Hence, remember to use moisturizers to hydrate your beautiful skin.
Let us all take steps to ensure the safety of our community in Qatar!
