In the last few days there has been a lot of reports from international media regarding a certain incident that took place at Qatar’s Hamad International Airport (HIA).

Details regarding the incident have been underlined in an official statement released by Qatar’s Government Communications Office (GCO).

According to the GCO statement, on October 2, 2020 “a newborn infant was found in a trash can, concealed in a plastic bag, buried under garbage at HIA.”

“The baby girl was rescued from what appeared to be a shocking and appalling attempt to kill her,” the statement added.

GCO confirmed that the infant is now safe after receiving medical care in Doha.

The statement pointed out that this is the first time an incident of this nature has taken place at HIA, prompting immediate action.

“This egregious and life-threatening violation of the law triggered an immediate search for the parents, including on flights in the vicinity of where the newborn was found,” the statement noted.

Although the urgent decision that guided the search was to “prevent the perpetrators of the horrible crime from escaping, the State of Qatar regrets any distress or infringement on the personal freedoms of any traveler caused by this action.”

The GCO statement confirmed that Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Interior His Excellency Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Thani has directed that “a comprehensive, transparent investigation into the incident be conducted.”

The findings of the investigation will be shared with Qatar’s international partners, the GCO said.

It further stressed, “Qatar remains committed to ensuring the safety, security and comfort of all travelers transiting through the country.”
