HH The Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani met with Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon at the presidential palace — the Palace of the Nation — in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, on Thursday.

The meeting came as part of HH The Amir’s visit to different Central Asian countries. The Qatari leader had earlier made state visits to Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan before arriving in Tajikistan for high-level talks.

The Tajik president, who welcomed Sheikh Tamim to his country, said 2024 would see the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Qatar and Tajikistan. He also expressed hopes that the two countries could strengthen their relations in various fields.

HH The Amir stressed Qatar’s keenness in strengthening relations between the two nations, saying the inauguration of the Grand Mosque in Dushanbe on Thursday was a testament of their strong friendship. The Grand Mosque in Dushanbe was funded by Qatar as a gift to the Tajik people.

Meanwhile, Sheikh Tamim and Rahmon oversaw a ceremony at the Palace of the Nation where a number of agreements and Memoranda of Understanding were signed between the governments of the two nations.

The two leaders witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Doha Municipality and the State Executive Authority of Dushanbe City to establish ‘twinningship’ relations between sister cities.

An agreement abolishing visa requirements for diplomatic and special passports holders between the two governments was signed.

Different MoUs for co-operation in the field of diplomatic training and education, trade between the two countries, standardisation, metrology and conformity assessment between the two nations, agriculture and food security, protecting endangered wildlife and preserving its natural environment, construction and infrastructure, tourism and business activities, as well as physical education and sports were also formalised.

MoUs were also signed to improve youth exchange programmes, cooperation in the field of defence, endowments and Islamic affairs, ministries of labour and justices in the two countries were also signed.

Later Thursday, Sheikh Tamim and his accompanying delegation left Dushanbe. They were seen off at the Dushanbe International Airport by several high-ranking officials from the two nations.
