His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Malaysian Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamed held official talks at the Amiri Diwan on Thursday.

During the bilateral meeting, HH the Amir and the Malaysian premier discussed ways to boost relations between Qatar and Malaysia and expand the existing partnership between the two nations in several fields.

HH the Amir and the Malaysian PM exchanged views on important regional and international issues, and also discussed the Kuala Lumpur Summit 2019 scheduled to take place on December 19, in which HH the Amir will participate at the invitation of Dr Mahathir.

Earlier, during a session of official talks chaired by HH the Amir and the prime minister of Malaysia, both sides discussed the close relations between Qatar and Malaysia and ways of consolidating them in different spheres, especially in economy, trade, investments, tourism and education sectors.

The session also saw discussions on a host of regional and international issues.

After the talks session, HH the Amir and the Malaysian prime minister witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding on the establishment of a high-level joint committee between Qatar and Malaysia.

HE the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani and a number of Qatari ministers as well as members of the official delegation accompanying Dr Mahathir Mohamed attended the talks session and the signing ceremony.

The Malaysian prime minister was accorded an official reception ceremony upon arrival at the Amiri Diwan.

Following the talks, the Amir hosted a luncheon banquet in honour of Dr Mahathir and the accompanying delegation.

During his official visit to Qatar, the Malaysian PM also met with Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF).

They discussed a host of topics related to Qatar Foundation’s research efforts and Silatech’s work in youth empowerment, as well as Education Above All’s ongoing programs for refugee education in Malaysia.

On a tour of the Qatar Foundation headquarters, Dr Mahathir emphasized the role of education in a nation’s development while highlighting the potential areas of collaboration between Qatar and Malaysia.

"There are certain similarities between our countries, such as our environments, and I believe we can work together very closely in areas such as this," he said. "Qatar is also very strong in the context of oil and gas, as Malaysia is on a smaller scale."

The prime minister also praised Qatar’s "pioneering efforts" in areas such as food security, including the establishment of dairy farms, and spoke of his admiration for the ecosystem of learning QF has created at Education City.
