HH The Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who is currently on a four-nation Latin American visit, met Paraguayan president Mario Abdo Benitez in Asuncion yesterday.

The two leaders met at the Presidential Palace in Paraguay’s capital city yesterday, according to Gulf Times.

HH the Amir has already visited Ecuador and Peru and will soon leave for Argentina.

The Paraguayan president expressed his happiness at Sheikh Tamim’s decision to visit Paraguay on the occasion of the 17th year of establishment of relations between the two countries.

The two leaders discussed ways for closer co-operation between the nations in the fields of economy, trade, culture and air transport. They also discussed the latest developments in the regional and international arenas, according to Qatar Tribune.

HH The Amir paid a visit to the country’s National Congress building before being handed over a key to the city of Asuncion in a glittering ceremony.

Meanwhile, Paraguay’s ambassador to Qatar Angel Ramon Barchini said the state visit was the beginning of a new phase of co-operation between the two nations. He said it would lay the foundation for stronger future prospects, reported Gulf Times.

The ambassador said Paraguay’s new government was committed to opening new markets in different continents of the world with special attention to the Middle East and Asian countries.

He stressed that the Paraguayan embassy in Qatar was the country’s only diplomatic representation in the entire GCC and would remain the main gateway to expansion into the Asian continent.
