The Department of Robotic Surgery, in cooperation with the Liver Surgery Department at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), was able to successfully perform the first-ever robotic surgery in the Gulf and Middle East region.

The operation was conducted in HMC and the patient was a middle-aged female. It involved the removal of a congenital malformation of the bile sac and rerouting it to the small intestine.

Dr. Hani Atallah, Head of the Robotic Surgery Department at HMC, said: "The patient's case is one of the rare cases, as it was discovered accidentally after she came to the hospital, suffering from severe abdominal pain, with yellowing of the eyes and skin color, which required blood tests, Which in turn showed an increase in the level of bile in the blood.”

“After the patient underwent a television and CT scan on the abdomen, she showed an expansion of the bile ducts, which prompted the treating doctor to decide immediately to surgically intervene to remove the tumor and divert the bile ducts to the normal path, at the hands of a multidisciplinary team of consulting doctors, consultants, anesthesia and nursing specialists,” he added.

After research and accurate diagnosis of the patient's case, the Da Vinci robot was used to perform the surgery. In comparison to the traditional surgery which requires a large incision in the patient's abdomen between 17 to 20 cm, the robotic surgery requires only six small incisions and is much more efficient (6 hours).

The patient managed to recover much faster and was discharged from HMC in an exceptional condition feeling normal within just three days. In comparison, traditional surgery takes between 7 to 10 days to recover in the hospital. Also, robotic surgeries give more precision and ease of access enabling the surgeon to see everything through a screen and control by giving orders to the robot using controllers.

HMC manages to keep up with the technological advancements in the medical field and continues to develop the knowledge and skills of specialists – improving overall patient satisfaction. All the while ensuring high-quality and safe health care that aligns with the commitment to providing an effective care system of international standards.

This successful robotic surgery shows the results of Qatar’s investments in healthcare.
