The World Health Organization (WHO) has categorized Hamad Medical Corporation's Tobacco Control Center as a collaborating center for treating tobacco addiction until August 2025.

This re-designation has put the State of Qatar and Hamad Medical Corporation on the map of WHO Collaborating Centers for Tobacco Dependence Treatment in the EMRO region, given the fact that they are the only ones of their nature in both regions.

On this occasion, the Tobacco Control Center's staff expressed their gratitude to Her Excellency Dr. Hanan Mohamed Al Kuwari, Minister of Public Health, for her continued support of the Center and its various programs and projects, as well as to HMC's Media Department for its important role in disseminating the Tobacco Control Center's awareness messages and highlighting the Center's various programs and projects.

Dr. Fatima El-Awa, WHO Regional Tobacco Free Initiative Adviser, and her team at the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean were also commended by the Center for their continuous support and efforts in implementing the authorized tobacco control action plan.

The Tobacco Control Center at HMC has pledged to continue its efforts and remain committed to combating tobacco use by providing treatment and counseling services for smokers, as well as community awareness activities and research projects, which will position Qatar among the world's top tobacco-free countries.

The Center will also continue to provide training to healthcare professionals in Qatar and the Eastern Mediterranean region in order to strengthen their knowledge and abilities in this field.

This will aid in the delivery of high-quality cigarette cessation programs, hence lowering the number of smokers and the incidence of tobacco-related diseases, as well as their financial costs.

The designation of HMC's tobacco Control Center as a WHO collaborating center for treating tobacco dependence means that the center is committed to implementing a series of activities to promote smoking cessation and raise awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use throughout Qatar, the region, and the world.

This commitment also involves providing training activities for healthcare professionals in the areas of smoking cessation and tobacco addiction treatment in order to reduce tobacco use rates and promote the WHO's global health agenda.
