In a bid to enhance the general ambiance of Qatar’s public places, the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) has launched a campaign focused on removing abandoned cars from different parts of Doha.

Doha Municipality together with MME’s Mechanical Equipment Department and Committee for Removing Abandoned Vehicles will conduct the activities of the campaign in Doha.

The cleanup drive complements the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to enforce Law No 18 of 2017 on Public Hygiene and dispose of dumped cars from all over Qatar.

Earlier, a dedicated committee was established for the task, which guided efforts in removing more than 61,500 abandoned vehicles in the country, since its formation.

More than 43,000 of these vehicles were kept in the Al Mashaf vehicle impound area and 18,312 in Mesaimeer.

The Ministry said that despite returning several of these vehicles to their owners, there are still 25,748 vehicles in Al Mashaf and 8,205 in Mesaimeer.

The committee’s earlier campaigns, run in coordination with different municipalities, resulted in the removal of 12,000 to 15,000 abandoned vehicles each year.

Around 500 of the confiscated vehicles were returned to their owners after completing the necessary legal procedures and the payment of the required fines.

The fines include QR1,000 for abandoning a vehicle coupled with transportation fees charged by the Mechanical Equipment Department, which is QR500 for light vehicles, QR800 for heavy vehicles and QR2,000 for equipment.

The Ministry has allocated a new location in Umm Salal Municipality’s Al Mazrouah area to accommodate the number of seized abandoned vehicles.

The new site can accommodate around 25,000 to 30,000 abandoned vehicles and will be the third such setup after those in Mesaimeer and Al Mashaf.

Additionally, the Ministry is also inviting applications from scrap-handling firms to dispose of the confiscated cars in an environmentally-friendly manner.
