Qatar's Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs has provided financial support for the establishment of a new Islamic Centre and Mosque in Lukavac, Bosnia and Herzegovina, expanding religious, educational and community services in the area.

The centre officially opened on August 15, 2026, following the completion of a multi-year project. The inauguration was attended by religious, official and diplomatic representatives.

Dr Hussein Kavazovic, Chief Scholar and Grand Mufti of Bosnia and Herzegovina, thanked HE Ghanem bin Shaheen bin Ghanem Al Ghanim, Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, for the ministry's contribution to financing the project.

He said the centre represents an important addition to the country's religious, educational and social institutions and reflects the cooperation between Qatar and Bosnia and Herzegovina in supporting humanitarian and community development.

The facility is expected to serve Muslims in Lukavac, Tuzla Canton and neighbouring areas, offering religious guidance, educational programmes and a range of community activities.

Its programmes will include religious and educational initiatives aimed at strengthening Islamic identity and promoting moderate religious awareness, while also supporting the education and development of younger generations.

The project has been developed as a broader cultural, educational and social centre rather than solely a place for worship and daily prayers.

Facilities include multipurpose halls for conferences, seminars and community and cultural activities, as well as educational spaces for Islamic and general learning programmes and classrooms dedicated to Quran memorisation for children and young people.

The centre is also expected to contribute to the education of Quran memorisers and students of Islamic sciences, while supporting cultural and intellectual activities, social cohesion, dialogue, coexistence and cooperation within the community.

Dr Kavazovic also praised Qatar's continued support for religious and educational initiatives in Bosnia and Herzegovina, describing the Lukavac centre as a symbol of the close ties between the two countries.
