News had emerged recently that millions of chicken eggs have been pulled from European market shelves and that hundreds of thousands of chicken are likely to be culled after it was found that the insecticide fipronil had illegally been used.

Police have made several arrests in The Netherlands and Belgium and more arrests are likely, reported Gulf Times.

Following the news, there had been scares in the local market that some of the eggs, imported from these countries, may have entered Qatar’s markets. However, the Ministry of Public Health has announced that local markets were free of the contaminated eggs, according to Gulf Times.

The Ministry said that Qatar does not import eggs from The Netherlands, reported The Peninsula. Official statistics show that a total of 1,550,920 kg of eggs were imported between May and July, from 10 countries including six Arab, three European and one East Asian country.

The Ministry emphasised that all imported consignments, regardless of country of origin, are subject to regular tests and inspection by the central food laboratories of the Ministry of Public Health.

All recent tests proved that eggs in the local markets were according to the accredited standards.
