The Ministry of Interior (MoI) has cautioned the people of Qatar to be wary of suspicious messages sent by fraudsters through different messaging services as a means to steal banking and financial information.

The messages may be sent via SMS, WhatsApp, or other social media channels.

They may contain links or trademarks of financial institutions that the user is already familiar with, in an attempt to appear ‘authentic.’

“Never respond to messages that require the user to update personal data or that contain links, and never share your personal and banking information with unknown parties,” the MoI urged.

Scammers who send these messages will usually ask for personal information such as user name, password, credit card numbers, among other confidential details.

“Sharing important information such as your bank account, credit card or passwords with someone else or any untrusted website will expose you to fraud and theft of your money,” the ministry highlighted.

Earlier the Ministry had also warned against scam messages, calls and emails regarding winning lotteries, fake job offers, and help for financial assistance, among others.

The Ministry encouraged the public to report any such cyber crimes to Cyber Crime Investigation Centre via Metrash2 or email to cccc@moi.gov.qa
