In a move that strengthens Qatar’s efforts toward a greener future, the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC) yesterday signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) with Nasser Bin Khaled & Sons Holding Co and Q-Auto to provide free electric vehicle chargers.
The agreements come under MoTC’s Electric Vehicle Strategy that seeks to strike “an economic-environmental balance in a way that ensures transportation sector’s infrastructure projects sustainability, supporting economic growth and making the most out of the natural resources,” the Ministry said in a statement.
Under the MoUs, the two companies will provide the electric vehicle chargers and carry out their periodic maintenance. The Ministry will specify the locations for the charging units.
The signing ceremony was held in the presence of His Excellency the Minister of Transport and Communications Jassim Seif Ahmed Al Sulaiti.
Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa) president engineer Essa bin Hilal Al Kuwari, Nasser Bin Khaled & Sons Holding Co-chairman Sheikh Nawaf bin Nasser bin Khaled Al Thani, and Q-Auto founding chairperson Sheikha Hanadi Nasser bin Khaled Al Thani were also present on the occasion.
MoTC director of Technical Affairs Department Sheikh Mohamed bin Khalid Al Thani, Nasser Bin Khaled & Sons Holding Co-managing director – Automotive Sheikh Faleh bin Nawaf al-Thani, and Q-Auto director of Operations Ahmed Shariefi initialled the MoUs.
“The MoUs come at a time when the country continues reinforcing the participation of the private sector in government developmental projects and encouraging its partaking in mobility and transportation projects in such a way that helps enrich private sector companies’ investment ideology, thus bolstering the localization of expertise and the technology in use,” Sheikh Mohamed said.
NBK's Sheikh Faleh expressed the company's delight to support Qatar’s strategy for sustainable development by promoting electric vehicles and providing their chargers.
"This co-operation with MoTC falls within NBK's national responsibilities for contributing to preserving the natural resources, protecting the environment, and supporting Qatar National Vision 2030, something which will positively impact the future of the nation and generations," he commented.
Shariefi highlighted that such a strategic partnership serves Q-Auto’s future vision on the electric vehicles industry. It coincides with the company’s launch of the first electric four-wheel vehicle in the country.
The signing of the MoUs complements MoTC's strategy to provide an integrated, world-class, and multimodal transportation system in Qatar featuring safe, reliable and eco-friendly services. It also supports the sustainability goals of the Qatar National Vision 2030.
Guided by this ambition, MoTC had announced in September this year that 25 percent of public transport buses in Qatar will be electric by 2022.
Public buses, public-schools' buses, and Doha Metro feeder buses will be gradually transformed into electric buses, to achieve the required percentage.
Electric buses will be used in the main services during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, making it the first tournament to use electric mass transit buses.
