Extreme weather conditions and laidback lifestyle are two reasons why people in Qatar don’t exercise much. As a result, Qatar holds the unpleasant record of being the eighth most obese nation on earth.
But the country is fighting back with new health programmes and the country’s newest malls, much larger than pre-existing ones, are joining in, reports Gulf Times.
The recently-opened Doha Festival City (DFC) has a special area for cyclists and joggers, which can be used free of cost.
While the 3-km outdoor leisure trail is expected to attract bikers, skateboarders, runners, and walkers, the increasing temperature could see people shift their exercise routine to inside the mall.
The DFC, which hosts more than 500 stores with over 100 dining outlets, offers visitors nearly 4km of corridors for walking.
Malls such as Hyatt Plaza, Al Khor, Villaggio, and Landmark has partnered with Aspire Zone Foundation to encourage people to walk and exercise under its “Step into Health, Walk in the Mall” programme.
For adults, the recommended target is 30 minutes of moderate activity five days a week.
