Qatar National Human Rights Committee Chairman, HE Dr Ali bin Smaikh Al-Marri, reached out to UN Special Rapporteur, Fionnuala Ni Aolain, to discuss the reexamination of safety and the improvement of humans rights while countering terrorism as HE urged her to locate the four Qataris detained by Saudi Arabia, and to work on their immediate release and return to Qatar.

Matters on the implications of the blockade were highlighted and recognized by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, as Dr. Al-Marri noted that severe violations towards human rights were made. He also emphasized that the four Qatari detainees are direct victims of arbitrary arrest and enforced disappearance.

Discussions were focused on the declarations made by the blockading countries about labeling various Qatari organizations and institutions as well as numerous public figures including journalists, activists, media personalities and political figures as ‘terrorists’ without bringing any substantial evidence forward.

Dr. Al-Marri stated his concern on how the assertion of their beliefs are direct aims to jeopardize Qatar’s reputation and define it as a terrorist state. He also added that these unfair testimonials are meant to disturb the rhythm of humanitarian work established in Qatar and to deprive many in need of the projects delivered by humanitarian organizations. The blockade is ultimately claimed to be powered by ulterior motives, rather than terrorism in itself, and rather catered to interrupt the pattern of opportunities in Qatar.

HE Dr. Al-Marri also emphasized that the claims made towards various public figures are unjustified as they strip away their right to freedom of expression and their position to obtain information on different disclosures. Potential agreements to cooperate were also entertained including the initiation of a partnership to work towards finding resolutions in protecting human rights and minimizing terrorism.
