His Excellency the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani yesterday inaugurated Qatar’s new naval base located in the country’s northeast.

Spread over 640,000 square meters, the Al Daayen Naval Base will play a key role in ensuring security across all of Qatar’s territorial waters and that of its border posts.

The new naval base will also serve as the head office of the General Directorate of Coasts and Borders Security, in the Semaisima area in northern Qatar.

The base is equipped with advanced systems that will further boost marine security, not only for Qatar but also for the region.

Forces from the base will conduct maritime patrols to prevent infiltration and smuggling of prohibited materials and control maritime violations.

They will also provide marine services to citizens and residents.

The inauguration ceremony of the base, which was held yesterday, convened several ministers, senior officials and ambassadors accredited to Qatar.

The ceremony highlighted the stages of development of the General Directorate of Coasts and Borders Security, its potentials, specialties, its role in securing maritime borders and preventing smuggling and illegal migration, its search, and rescue operations, among other specialties.

During the ceremony, HE the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior also launched new naval boats belonging to the General Directorate of Coasts and Borders Security.

Additionally, HE the prime minister toured some new buildings of the department. During the tour, he was briefed on the most important facilities and equipment required to carry out coastal and border security tasks.

Established according to a model that takes into account the functions and competences of the General Directorate of Coasts and Borders Security, the base accommodates all its units, as well as a sophisticated seaport with a depth of 6 meters.

Other than that the base also comprises sports, training and medical facilities, civil defense, manufacturing and maintenance workshops, operating rooms, officers' accommodation, and other facilities.
