The current state of lawlessness and fighting in Syria has become extremely bad and thousands of people have lost their lives in the crossfire.

Qatar, which has always stood for peace and harmony, has called for a speedy resolution to the crisis several times.

Although the atrocities have been well-documented by UN reports, the guilty have not been punished so far, said Ambassador HE Ali Khalfan Al Mansouri, Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office and other international organisations in Geneva.

Al Mansouri reiterated Qatar’s firm position that supports the legitimate demands of the Syrian people and the international mechanism in order to facilitate and accelerate the advancement of fair and independent criminal proceedings in accordance with the international law.

The country underlined the position that there has been a failure to take appropriate action against people who have been involved in human rights violations, war crimes and crimes against humanity in Syria despite there being clear evidence regarding the same, reported Gulf Times.

He stressed that the work of international mechanisms represents the first step that will pave the way for achieving accountability and justice for Syrian victims after seven-plus years of heinous crimes.

“Achieving accountability is also a prerequisite for reaching a political solution in accordance with the Geneva Declaration 1. It is also necessary for the achievement of lasting and comprehensive peace in Syria,” he was quoted as saying by Qatar Tribune.
