Qatar Airways is pushing ahead with diversification of its flying routes and the Turkish city of Hatay is the latest in its sights.
The country’s national carrier announced that it will commence its maiden flight to the Turkish city on April 4, reported Gulf Times.
Hatay is Qatar Airways’ fifth gateway in Turkey. It also operates flights to Istanbul’s Sabiha Gokcen Airport (thrice daily), Istanbul Ataturk Airport (10 times a week), Adana Sakirpasa Airport (three times a week) and a daily service to Ankara’s Esenboga Airport.
The new three-times-weekly route will be served by an Airbus A320, featuring 12 seats in Business Class and 132 seats in Economy Class, reported The Peninsula.
Hatay, also known as Antakya, was one of the largest cities in the Roman Empire, and is known for its many well-preserved ancient Roman mosaics, as well as its traditional products including olive oil soap, fine silk and delicious local cuisine.
“We’re delighted to announce the launch of this new route, which reflects the close relationship between Qatar and Turkey. And Turkey itself is continuing to grow in popularity with our passengers for both business and leisure purposes, attracting travellers who wish to enjoy its rich culture.
“We’re delighted to offer yet another gateway into this spectacular country, and to provide even more choice to our passengers who wish to experience all that Turkey has to offer,” Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Akbar Al Baker was quoted as saying by Qatar Tribune.
Qatar Airways has been on an expansion spree in recent months. It recently announced the launch of a service to the Thai tourist city of Pattaya. Earlier, it had launched a non-stop flight from Doha to Russia’s St. Petersburg.
Qatar Airways is also expected to take delivery of 30 brand new planes this year.
