On the sidelines of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly, the State of Qatar attended a ministerial conference on safeguarding the achievements of 20 years of international engagement in Afghanistan.

H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, represented Qatar at the meeting.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed his delight at being able to attend the meeting, which was held virtually at the ministerial level and focused on safeguarding the achievements of 20 years of international engagement in Afghanistan, with a special emphasis on continued support for Afghan women and girls' futures and access to education.

He reaffirmed Qatar's complete solidarity with the Afghan people and support for their efforts to fulfill their rightful objectives for peace, stability, and development.

Moreover, he stated that the State of Qatar believes that comprehensive and long-term peace is the most important factor in ending the humanitarian crisis and achieving all of the Sustainable Development Goals, including the fourth goal, which relates to quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for all.

The State of Qatar supports the transitional administration and Afghan leaders to build a more inclusive government that represents everyone, according to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs.

He went on to say that the State of Qatar stressed the importance of respecting women's rights and the critical role played by Afghan women in the country's development. Qatar also invited the current government to follow the lead of many Islamic countries, including the State of Qatar, where women fully and constructively exercise their rights and make up the majority of the workforce.

He noted that the State of Qatar responded to assist in the evacuation of over 58,000 people from Kabul to Qatar, giving them temporary shelter, meals, and medical attention, as well as vaccines for the growing coronavirus for those who required them. Families, NGO personnel, journalists, athletes, children, and many Afghan women who feel they are in danger are among the evacuees, according to His Excellency.

All members of the "Afghan Dreamers," an all-girls robotics team from the Afghan city of Herat, between the ages of 15 and 19, were safely evacuated to Qatar, according to the Deputy Prime Minister.

He further said that they received scholarships from the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science, and Community Development (QF) and the Qatar Fund for Development to continue their education at QF universities. Sheikh Mohammed explained that this demonstrates Qatar's strong commitment to ensuring that children of all ages have access to education.

He emphasized that Qatar's actions represent the country's commitment to the Afghan people and their right to dignity and safety, and that it will spare no effort in assisting them and working closely with its Afghan and international allies, as well as the United Nations.
