Qatar and South Korea have always shared strong, friendly relations.

In a bid to further strengthen bilateral ties, the two countries have pledged to take the necessary steps to amplify trade, investment, and industrial co-operation.

This came at a meeting of the Qatari- Korean high-level strategic co-operation committee held in Doha yesterday.

This was the fifth meeting of the committee.

His Excellency the Minister of Commerce and Industry Ali bin Ahmed Al Kuwari and South Korea’s Minister of Trade, Industry, and Energy Sung Yun-mo were the co-chairs of the meeting.

The meeting gathered representatives from the ministries of commerce and industry, foreign affairs, municipalities and environment, culture and sports, health, education, transport and communication as well as Qatar Petroleum, Qatar Central Bank, Qatar Chamber, Qatar Investment Authority, Qatar Airways, Qatar Civil Aviation Authority and the Public Works Authority (Ashghal).

In the meeting, the two sides reviewed aspects of cooperation in various sectors of mutual interest and discussed the progress made in the recommendations of the fourth committee meeting held in Seoul in 2016.

The meeting also discussed the current projects between the two sides, plans to expand them and ways to overcome obstacles.

Additionally, the meeting saw discussions on enhancing cooperation between the two countries in various fields, including trade, investment, industry, agriculture, health, education, infrastructure.

HE Al Kuwari stressed the importance of bilateral cooperation as its contribution to advancing the developmental aspirations of both countries.

He noted that Qatar considers South Korea a promising strategic partner in light of the potential of both countries.

HE the Minister also called for the development of strong and solid partnerships that serve the aspirations of both sides to promote growth and ensure sustainable development and prosperity.

After the meeting, HE Al Kuwari and Sung Yun-mo signed the minutes of the meeting.

The co-chairs also inaugurated the Qatari-Korean Business Forum that aims to enhance trade, investment, and industrial cooperation and enhance communication prospects between representatives of the Qatari and Korean private sectors.

Earlier in July, the visit of the South Korean premier, Lee Nak-Yeon, to Qatar provided a major boost to Qatar-Korea relations with the signing of some key cooperation agreements.

Before that, as part of his Asian Tour, His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani had visited South Korea. During the visit, multiple agreements were signed between the two nations as a means to promote collaboration and boost ties.
