Qatar Museums, in collaboration with the UNESCO Regional Office for the Gulf States and Yemen, will host a public conference titled "Coastal and Maritime Cultural Heritage in Qatar" on Thursday, August 20, at the Auditorium of the National Museum of Qatar.

The conference is being organised to mark the International Day for Underwater Cultural Heritage, observed annually on August 21, as part of international efforts to raise awareness of underwater heritage as an integral part of humanity’s shared cultural legacy and collective memory.

Archaeologists and heritage specialists will come together to present research on Qatar’s coastal landscapes, maritime traditions and historic communities.

Through a series of short lectures, experts from Qatar Museums’ Archaeology Department and UNESCO will discuss research, documentation, conservation and sustainable management of underwater cultural heritage.

Faisal Al Naimi, Director of the Archaeology Department at Qatar Museums, said Qatar’s coastal and maritime heritage forms an essential part of its shared history and identity.

He highlighted the importance of research, conservation and public engagement in ensuring that this heritage is understood, protected and passed on to future generations, while noting that cooperation with the UNESCO Regional Office for the Gulf States and Yemen supports efforts to raise awareness and strengthen protection of underwater cultural heritage.

The conference will also examine sustainable approaches to managing underwater cultural heritage, including how protection and conservation can be balanced with scientific research and public engagement.

The event reflects Qatar Museums’ and UNESCO’s shared commitment to the principles of the 2001 Convention, which provides an international framework for protecting underwater cultural heritage, as well as to international cooperation and knowledge exchange in archaeology and cultural heritage.

Qatar Museums’ Archaeology Department continues to develop understanding of the country’s past through field excavations, scientific research, conservation and public programmes, while working to preserve and share its cultural heritage.

The public is invited to attend the conference, learn more about Qatar’s maritime past and engage with specialists working in the field.
