Every year on 18 December, Qatar unites in celebration of its National Day, a moment to reflect on the country’s origins, present achievements and hopes for the future.

Why 18 December? A Historic Founding

Qatar National Day marks the anniversary of a pivotal moment in history: in 1878, Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed bin Thani succeeded his father and united the different tribes of the peninsula — laying the foundations of the modern state.

Although 3 September (the date of Qatar’s independence in 1971) was used for official celebrations in the past, the holiday was re-declared as National Day on 18 December by decree in 2007 — to honor the deeper historical roots of the country.

Traditions & Celebrations on Qatar National Day

On Qatar National Day, the whole country comes alive with patriotism, heritage, and festivities:

  • Public holiday: Schools and workplaces close, allowing families and citizens to participate in celebrations.
  • Festivals & Cultural Activities: The festivities often extend beyond just 18 December. For 2025, the cultural events at Darb Al Saai will run from 10–20 December, offering heritage exhibitions, traditional crafts, music, performances, and more, reflecting Qatar’s rich history and identity. • Public Morale & Identity: People decorate homes and streets with the maroon-and-white national colors, wave flags, wear traditional clothing, a visible expression of unity and pride. Educational institutions, public agencies, and communities often mark the day with programs that reinforce national identity and belonging.

Qatar National Day 2025 — Official Theme & Significance

This year’s official slogan for National Day 2025 is:

“With you it rises, and from you it awaits”

(Arabic: «بكم تعلو ومنكم تنتظر»)

Originating from a 2016 speech by Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani (Amir of the State of Qatar) — the message underscores that the real strength of the nation lies in its people. The slogan reflects a vision where human development is the core of progress, and the nation’s future depends on the active engagement and contributions of individuals.

As stated by the Minister of Culture, the slogan encourages a renewed collective commitment: “nation-building goes hand in hand with building the individual.” It calls on citizens to embrace their roles — contributing to society with determination, loyalty and sense of duty
