Qatar, represented by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, is participating in the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (COP17), being held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
The conference brings together participating countries, international and regional organisations and entities working in the fields of desertification, land degradation and drought.
Qatar’s delegation is headed by Dr Ibrahim Abdul Latif Al Muslimani, Assistant Undersecretary for Protection and Natural Reserves Affairs at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.
COP17 is addressing a number of priority issues, including restoring degraded land, achieving land degradation neutrality, strengthening resilience to drought, and promoting the sustainable management of land and rangelands.
The conference is also examining ways to strengthen the role of science, data and modern technologies in supporting implementation of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification.
Qatar’s participation reflects its commitment to the objectives of the convention and aligns with national efforts to protect land and natural resources, combat desertification and preserve biodiversity in line with Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Third National Development Strategy.
During the conference, Qatar is presenting a number of national initiatives focused on protecting and rehabilitating terrestrial ecosystems, restoring rawdas and rangelands, and developing vegetation cover using native plant species.
The country is also highlighting efforts to combat invasive plant species and use geographic information systems and modern technologies to monitor land conditions and vegetation cover.
Through its participation, Qatar has stressed the importance of strengthening international cooperation, exchanging expertise and knowledge, building capacity and supporting science- and innovation-based solutions to accelerate global efforts to reduce land degradation and enhance resilience.
