Qatar has maintained a strong focus on creating educational opportunities for students not only locally but also internationally for years.

In the same light, the country’s national university, Qatar University (QU), has planned to set up branches in some countries in Asia and Africa, the president of the university highlighted yesterday.

Speaking at the Shura Council’s regular weekly meeting, Dr Hassan Rashid Al Derham gave an overview of QU’s strategy (2018-2022) and its future goals.

The university has plans to further develop technical research, which will see the establishment of QU ‘technical company.’ This project has reached advanced stages with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Dr Al Derham said.

In addition to this the university also seeks to set up a "knowledge group", which will be a consultancy office for government agencies and others.

In a bid to enhance the university's financial sustainability, a project for university endowment is also in the works, studies on which are being finalized.

Dr Al Derham also shined a spotlight on the university’s most prominent initiatives and hailed the support the university has had from the country’s leadership since its establishment.

"We have a clear vision and message,” he said.

The QU president also presented other details such as the percentages of Qatari students and academic staff, as well as the university’s endeavors to attract more Qataris to join as teaching staff.

Dr Al Derham also emphasized the university’s focus on national identity, traditions, and customs of the Qatari society, Arab culture, as well as Islamic values.
